Comments on statistical analyses of acquired inland literature

Acquisition is focused mainly on acquiring current inland production in full range of its kinds and subject structure, on acquiring indispensable multiple copies keeping line with the collection profile and on retrospective acquisition of Bohemical desiderata. The acquired documents are included in the National Archival Collection, the Universal Library Collection, and in the Study Collection.

Inland acquisition totalled 43,745 units.

The legal deposit is acquired in accordance with the Law No. 37/1995 Coll. on non-periodical publication. The Library is entitled to receive two free copies of each edition of a publication according to this Law.

In 2002 the total of 37,772 unites (=20,145 titles) of non-periodical legal deposit copies were acquired, i.e. 86.35% of the total number of acquired publications. From this number 30,328 units were books (=15,350 titles), 756 cartographic documents (=380 titles), 309 graphics (=270 titles), 2,100 posters (=1,270 titles), 1,446 postcards (=1,446 titles), 317 printed music (=160 titles), and 2,516 non-book documents (=1,265 titles). Compared with 2001, the number of legal deposit slightly increased.

The above mentioned Law was not yet fully respected; therefore, we had to claim the missing titles of copies (personally, by phone, letter, or e-mail – about one third of not delivered titles had to be claimed in this or that way). But we tolerated the practice of the majority of big publishers sending legal deposit copies in cumulated batches in longer terms. Because of that, some titles were not received in thirty days after publication as fixed by the Law, but it was not possible to detect precisely the day of publication in current practice.

In accordance with UNESCO recommendations, the annual statistics of non-periodical publications published in the Czech Republic in 2002 included 14,278 titles, as derived from the total of obtained legal deposit copies.

Through purchase, 3,138 units were acquired. The proportion of purchase to total acquisition was 7.17%. The average cost of one purchased unit was CZK 358. Included were publications of various prices – from titles of current market production to exceptional antiquarian book offers. Compared with 2001, the purchase of inland documents remains nearly on the same level.

As for the current offer, the majority of publications were purchased for the Study Collection (1,536 units), for the Universal Library Collection (1,500 units in total of which 837 items for reference libraries of study rooms and for the Reference Centre). In addition to the current book production we succeeded to purchase Bohemical desiderata from second-hand book shops (62 units) for the National Archival Collection. With regard to financial means the Bohemical part of the Universal Library Collection was enriched with additional copies. For internal use of the library departments, 40 units were purchased.

Gifts of older literature were still the main source of retrospective acquisition, while gifts of current publications were not frequent. Their selection was aimed mainly at acquisition of Bohemical desiderata or other requested copies. We acquired 2,293 units in total. The proportion of gifts to the total number of acquired titles was 5.24%. Compared with 2001, the number of gifts of inland documents has fallen down.

A greater part of received volumes were included into the Universal Library Collection (1,476 units) and into the National Archival Collection (591 units). A considerably lower number of volumes were included into the Study Collection (93 units), into the collection of non-printed documents (32 units), and into reference libraries (10 units).

From the co-called internal sources (ISBN collection, reserve collection, or photocopies) 421 units were included into the library holdings. Their selection was mainly aimed at Bohemical desiderata. 98 of them were included into the National Archival Collection, 323 included into the Universal Library Collection. The proportion of internal sources to the total number of acquired titles was 0.96%.

As replacements of lost volumes, 121 units were included into collections (into the Universal Library Collection 120 units and into the Study Collection 1 unit). The proportion of replacements to the total number of acquired titles was 0.28%.
